L’arte dell’essere umani. Parte 3:

The Art of Being Human, Part 3:
Healing from The System

.

Three weeks following my discharge from having been hospitalized on a 5150 following my suicide attempt, I went to a vocational rehabilitation agency and enrolled in their training program which lasted a year.

At their invitation for me to apply for a position there, I eventually transitioned from client to staff and started out spectacularly well, garnering an excellent 3 month evaluation. This hit a glitch soon after my review because I had inadvertently triggered the CEO in a very innocent way trying to communicate about a project I had been assigned. Rather than it becoming a teaching moment, which would have been rehabilitative, the situation slid into high drama with reprimands and punishments, including a private meeting with the very scary and anger-prone president of this agency, in full sinister partnership with the CEO.
And even though my co-workers liked me quite a bit and I was actually friends with a couple of staff members outside of work and who fully agreed with me and could see this management team was giving me a ridiculously hard time over nothing, while at the same time they knew that I was helping clients in a big way with tangible results of employment because I was real and heart-based, I was ultimately fired because of the “anti-authoritarian” entry in my file, from my psychiatrist. That was their ammunition against my credibility, while in reality they were lying all over the place! And of course, my co-workers were much too frightened of losing their jobs if they supported me. THAT is a toxic system, based on lies, illusions, and fear.
I must have been sheltered up to that time. I really did not know how corruptly adults could act and was absolutely stunned with the childish and sadistic behavior of these “professionals,” like angry teenage playground bullies. I became disillusioned with what I thought I knew, and suddenly I was seeing through social programs. This should never have happened.
I took the agency to legal task and I won hands down, because it was easy to see that this management team was lying about me and distorting reality in multiple ways, and that I was being bullied and discriminated against. I was on my way back from having been devastated by the disability of psych drugs, and this is what I encountered for my very hard work. This took me a while to reconcile, and where my awakening became profound.

The vindication was positive and healing for me, but it was only the tip of the iceberg. The stacked deck, oppressive tendencies, stigmatizing and marginalizing practices, along with blatant disregard for employment and contract law and ethics, was really bad—sinister and relentless—as I was going from agency to agency along my journey trying to find transitional support and integrating my healing work. Because of these human-created hurdles, I had to go to great lengths to even get a fraction of justice while I was continuing to recover from heinous psych drugs withdrawal and trying to get my professional life back on track.
Still, the entire foundation of my legal action was based on my “disabled self” being limited in what I could handle (which is an illusion, obviously I can take quite a licking and keep on ticking), rather than on how brutally abusive some of these individuals can be, and how it adds up to pure systemic abuse on top of incompetent fraudulent services, from psychiatry to social services. I know how to function in a healthy work environment just fine. But when the system is toxic, I will not be able to tolerate it, nor would I want to. I did at one time in my life, for a long time, and ended up on toxic drugs to cover up the toxic environment. So, been there, done it, no thanks. This time, I’m standing my ground and staying clear in who I am, as an ever-evolving being. The world around me cannot stay the same if I am changing.

So even though I did get validation for my perspective, which was huge for me, I still paid a price which I could not avoid in such a toxic situation, and the bullying and discrimination I experienced lingered like cut glass in my nervous system, and caused me a lot of chronic and debilitating pain until I was able to shift and transmute all of this abuse energy and perspective through deep spiritual work.

In short, that was my brand of suffering, and it created oceans of self-doubt for me, along with terrible paranoia. If my reality could so easily be dismissed, discounted, and condemned, then not only did that make me feel terribly unsafe in the world, but in addition, I felt that I had no right or reason to live only as a burden to others, rather than as a valued and contributing member of society, which is how I was raised and how I had always perceived myself.
But being told straight out that I was defective, limited, and permanently impaired and disabled—that I had lost my dreams–was the mirroring I received from this so-called “mental health clinician.” To my mind, therefore, my life had no value, and that is where I based my very conscious decision to end my life. Knowing what my reality had become at that time, I thought it was a compassionate choice for one and all.
What I was not conscious of at the time, however, is what I later learned and discovered as I continued my healing journey (which I will explore more in depth in a future article) is that even in the darkest corner of the darkest shadow of our psyche and world, somehow, someway, in some form, there is light, always. We may not perceive it in the moment, which can be rough to not feel light and only darkness, but we can still know it is there, and eventually we will come back to feeling it, and this will bring relief and clarity in the moment. From there, we can feel our inspiration and inner guidance.
This can be the hardest thing to believe when we are in the throes of extreme distress, for whatever reason. But true Faith means knowing from reason and experience that the sun continues to shine brilliantly behind even the darkest and stormiest of clouds. Eventually, the clouds part and we feel and see the sun again with no doubt, it is there and we know it through our physical senses. A few minutes prior, this may not have been the case. Reality changes and energy always shifts, that is the nature of reality.

Conclusion: A Challenge to Humanity

Can we remember to trust what we have always known, even in our worst moments, that we are our own light, despite whatever shadows are thrust upon us by others? If so, then we have learned the art of being human, and that is from where we will manifest our reality.
Life is a magnificent work of art, always in progress, and we are a collective of natural artists and creators. I truly believe this. From this perspective, we have the freedom to create the world we want, on our terms.
But still, we are actually co-creators, because we all have the same free will of thought, focus, beliefs, and feelings—our palate of colors and special effects—which means that we are doing this together, one way or another. We are all individuals with our own unique visions, voices, perspectives, and processes, but we are also a collective connected at the heart of our humanity.
So back to–what happens when we, as co-creators, are intent on creating two realities which do not reconcile, as was the case with me and this psychiatrist? He lied about me, or at the very best, he misread me really badly, based purely on textbook stigma, and spread it like gossip within the community much to my detriment, calling it “professional consulting.”

And the absolute truth is that this brand of “consulting” cost me my credibility after almost destroying me, personally and professionally.
Frankly, I get tired of talking about how I was victimized by the system because this perception can only go so far in creating core changes, and I would like to move past this. Owning that this was my path and it served to awaken me is how I come into the present to harness whatever power I can muster to create better ways to offer support to ourselves and each other, when that is what is called for. It is obvious that as a society, we have strayed far from loving kindness, integrity, and the humility to be flexible in our thinking.
For me, personally, it is appropriate at this time to be mindful of integrating heart consciousness into this process of solving these complex problems which exist stubbornly within humanity, like a cancer. Instead of identifying with “victim,” I would like to more be identified with “problem-solver,” focusing instead on how all of these vastly divergent perspectives can, somehow, harmonize, so that we can get on with healing at a collective level. Only then will individuals, who of course are what comprise this collective, have the opportunity to find their own healing and discover the truth of their/our lives in a way that is creative, fulfilling, and actually enjoyable—rough patches and all.
Life would be boring with no challenges and we would cease to grow. But how about we create a level playing field for all, rather than starting out with all the chips on one side of the table? That is never fair, and it will never work. Truth is real life and experiential, not academic or theoretical. We are all experts on our own reality. And, we are all artists, teachers, and students along the way. Let’s start there.

  1. I wanted to post here a link to the second film I made–a 28 minute short musical documentary–5 years after making Voices That Heal. Due to navigating the corruption of the system from a healing perspective–that is, from understanding that this was my path of growth and awakening, despite (and because of) how challenging it was due to facing corruption and discrimination from those who were supposed to have been helping me–I experienced transformation, which is how I found freedom, by connecting to my innate creativity. That is soul growth, when the ego is challenged.

When we transform our inner landscape and detach from old beliefs based on stigma and negative projections, then the world around us changes, it has to. That’s how energy works, and the universe. This film is a good example of that, how my world transformed following core healing. It’s a joyous little film with a lot of fun music, please enjoy! (And my apologies to non-English speaking readers, the film is in English. Still lots of music and good cheer, from the universal language of love :))

    Google-translated/tradotto:

  2. **Readers, please know that this dialogue is going from bottom to top, the comments are posting in reverse order. I’ve been adivsed that, for the time being, nothing can be done about this. I am hoping this will be remedied in the near future. Thanks for your patience with this techno-glitch.

  3. Thank you both so much for your validating and insightful comments and for bringing your voices to the table. Such a task at hand, to change all of this, we do need collective voices to bring heart, spirit, and light as factors in all of this. We have, indeed, forgotten the light, if this is the situation.

The inhumanity of it is over the top, and the fact that it is the “norm,” is so disturbing to me. We’ve grown so accustomed to the abuse all around us because it is relentless and so exhausting to fight it off, that I believe we’ve become inured. This is where waking up can be challenging, but without awakening, there is only continued darkness and shadows at which to stare, which only beget more shadows. That’s a bottomless pit of self-sabotage, where there appears to be no light.

The ones scapegoated in these situations—and there have been so many of us–are the ones with the power to change it. Problem is, in a dysfunctional and power-imbalanced system, the scapegoat will always keep getting cut off from their power, by definition. First, with neurotoxins, and then, with negative stigmatizing projections which ruin them in the community, creating both, internal and external sabotage.

This is exactly what I most wish to bring to light at this time, and where transformation is most possible, imo. At present, I cannot see any solution other than to allow nature to take its course–let the river run, so to speak, it has and indefatigable current–rather than to try to control the direction and outcome of absolutely everything. That is humanly impossible, but it’s amazing how hard people try to control and control and control. I think it’s the downfall of our society, this lack of trust in the process of Earth, Nature, and the Light.

That is what leads to these toxic situations, where reality is NOT consensual, but more like forced onto others, and aggressively, akin to rape, and it completely and so unnecessarily ruins lives, while the blame is projected everywhere except where it belongs, on the aggressor, the bully clinician’s insidiously abusive dynamics. These folks have tons of unowned issues, no doubt about that, and a lot of fear and anger built up, while judging everyone else’s emotions. That is so toxic, so dangerous, and so sabotaging, and I would like to see this turn around. Let’s bring integrity back, and make anything else unacceptable. That is the nature of my activism.

  4. “Owning that this was my path and it served to awaken me is how I come into the present to harness whatever power I can muster to create better ways to offer support to ourselves and each other…”

This level of self-responsibility I find to be extremely humane and moving. It seems from what you write here that you shift conflicts into solutions with eye-opening and conscientious awareness, which is not just simply problem-solving, but also transformative. As far as the art of being human goes, you are an example of a master artist.

Thank you for sharing your story, and thank you especially for sharing a perspective that is inclusive, for the purpose of healing on a collective level. Obviously, we all play a part in this.

  5. Thank you for sharing your challenging journey in this very valuable 3 Part article Alex! Every voice is so important in exposing the damage done to so many unsuspecting people under the guise of “help”.

You write with much honesty and truth.
“It is obvious that as a society, we have strayed far from loving kindness, integrity, and the humility to be flexible in our thinking”.
Yes, and it is particularly disturbing to discover those in positions of power and whom we placed trust in, have NO integrity and are very narrow-minded, rigid thinkers.
