Se si volessero fare considerazioni sui fattori che influenzano la politica riguardante l’assistenza sanitaria negli Stati Uniti, l’osservazione più ovvia riguarderebbe la qualità dell’assistenza sanitaria e psicologica fornita ai cittadini statunitensi. Purtroppo, la realtà è molto più complessa e sembra dipendere dalle posizioni dei due principali partiti politici.La seguente mappa rappresenta la distribuzione del consenso elettorale del territorio statunitense nel 2016, come curata dal New York Times. Gli stati in rosso sono a maggioranza repubblicana mentre gli stati in blu a maggioranza democratica.

If one were to guess on the considerations that influence policy regarding health care in the United States, the obvious consideration should be about providing quality behavioral and physical care to the citizens. Unfortunately, the reality is much more complex and who is provided healthcare and by whom seems to be dictated by the two main political parties.
The following map is a 2016 breakdown by the New York Times of political party controlled states in the United States. The red states are Republican majority and the blue states are Democratic majority.

Rimanendo sul soggetto, la mappa che segue è del 2018 e mostra quali stati abbiano o non abbiano adottato l’espansione della copertura sanitaria statale e federale che in America è conosciuta come “Medicaid”. I colori sono invertiti rispetto alla mappa di sopra, ma mostra fondamentalmente che gli stati repubblicani non hanno adottato l’espansione statale o federale del “Medicaid”. Ovviamente, la decisione di adottare o non adottare il provvedimento era di natura politica e vi è un disaccordo tra le due parti in merito all’adozione, ai costi ed altri fattori riguardanti l’espansione della copertura sanitaria.

The following map is from 2018 and shows which states did or did not adopt state and federal Medicaid health expansion. The colors are reversed from the map above, but it basically shows that the Republican controlled states did not adopt state or federal Medicaid Healthcare expansion. Obviously, the decision to adopt or not to adopt was political in nature and there is a disagreement between parties regarding adoption, cost, etc., of the healthcare expansion.

Spostandoci su un soggetto differente, la mappa che segue, tratta da un articolo sul sito web www.thestranger.com, mostra lo stato attuale della legalizzazione della cannabis sia per uso medico che adulto / ricreativo. Gli stati in rosso sono quelli in cui la cannabis non è legale, sia per l’uso medico che ricreativo. Questi stati sono gli stati repubblicani, per la maggior parte. Ancora una volta, come per la copertura sanitaria, sembra che la decisione sull’utilizzo di una pianta naturale a scopo terapeutico si riduca a una questione meramente politica, piuttosto che ad un approccio che segua il buon senso per la salute e il benessere individuale e comune.

This next map is from an article on www.thestranger.com website shows the current status of cannabis legalization both for medical and adult / recreational use. The states in red are the ones where cannabis is not legal for medical or adult use. These states are the Republican states, for the most part. Once again, it seems that the decision whether someone can use a natural plant for health comes down to a party control rather than a common sense approach to health and well-being.

In sostanza, in questo breve articolo non si vuol dire che un partito sia meglio o peggio dell’altro. La morale che scaturisce da questi dati è che l’accesso ai servizi sanitari, inclusi quelli psicologici, non dovrebbe essere parte di un dibattito politico. Infatti, l’accesso ad una assistenza sanitaria di qualità dovrebbe essere un diritto per tutti, avulso da considerazioni politiche e religiose.

This article is not to say one party is good or another party is bad. The moral of this article is that behavioral and physical health access should not be on the debate stage. Access to quality healthcare should be a right for all and removed from the political and religious arenas.
